I wanted to share this video today from Alexis Ohanian, who gave this amazing presentation which is an excellent how-to social media example. I met Alexis in Edinbugh a couple of months ago and was really impressed by his relaxed, humorous presentation style, so when I heard he had spoke at TED, I couldn’t wait to hear what he had to say to this influential group.
It is a three minute video and guaranteed to change your perspective with this fun example. Enjoy!
Takeaway Thoughts
There’s a couple of great takeaway points here:
- Know where you’re going, but don’t worry so much about the journey. Greenpeace knew what their goal was – to stop the whaling expedition – but at first they thought they knew exactly how they were going to get there. The realised they needed to relax, ride the waves, and see where the social networking ‘ocean’ was going to take them. But they didn’t forget where they were going – keep your sights on the goal! I can’t help but think this is always how small business has worked. Social networks didn’t change it much in this regard.
- Just because it’s fun doesn’t mean it isn’t effective. Mr Splashy Pants turned out to be a huge marketing coup for Greenpeace. So what if it is silly? If it accomplishes your goals, then it’s awesome. After all – aren’t we all in our businesses to enjoy ourselves? I know I am.
