Seth Godin: The Good Stuff Oct 6, 2009

by Andy Hayes

I’ve been working my way through Seth Godin’s series of books and I mention them here because I highly recommend them.  Seth’s earned his place amongst the bookshelf of business “classics,” but there’s just something about the great-big-happy thinking of Seth’s that I just can’t get enough of.

Seth Godin

What’s Great about Seth:  If you’re looking left, Seth will point right.  If you’re looking up, he’ll point down.  He’s always got a new perspective, a new slant.  And Seth thinks BIG.

What’s Not So Great about Seth: Seth will push you out of your comfort zone with chapters that you’ll probably have to take notes and come back to for a re-read.  Seth doesn’t talk about specifics, he talks at a conceptual level.  So you’ll need to do some heavy thinking to bring those to life in your small business.

My Seth Favourites so Far…

Here are my Seth Godin favourites (so far) – with links in both Pounds and US Dollars:

Purple Cow

Why: Because it forces you to think about how you can be more amazing to your customer. Better products delivered with better service running on better processes. Not just better, but wildly different and wildly better.

The Dip

Why: Because being a small business is hard. I know. Sometimes it is real hard. The Dip is a reminder of why you’re pushing so hard and why it’s worth it.

Small is the New Big: : And 183 Other Riffs, Rants and Remarkable Business Ideas

Why: We’re lean, mean small business machines. You already knew this was the cool place to be, but here are (183) more reasons why. Guaranteed to generate new ideas for ways to better promote your small business.

Check out the Amazon descriptions/reviews and see if something resonates with you – none of them are very expensive and well worth your time. As of this writing, Amazon is offering up a discount if you buy three different Godin books.

If you’ve already read Seth, I’d love to hear your feedback below in the comments. Otherwise, happy reading!

Note:  We get a (near microscopic) commission as part of our relationship with Amazon if you use our links.  Feel free to go to Amazon directly if you’re not comfortable with that.
