Post-Recession Online Travel Trends

I’ve been reviewing a recent article about post-recession trends in travel with a great deal of interest; it was written by eMarkter, a company that does a LOT of great market research across a number of sectors.  The article focuses on online travel trends, and it definitely echoes a lot of the sentiment shared here in the TOP community.  In summary, the article says, despite the drop in travel due to the global recession:

…usage of the Internet for researching, discussing and booking leisure and unmanaged business travel has shown surprising resilience.

A few other interesting points in the eMarkter report:

  • Despite the recession-induced mood, consumers are still seeking value for money – not just a deal, but quality as well.    That’s why businesses with great products and services are thriving.
  • Mobile, Mobile, Mobile.  It seems travel and mobiles continue to go hand-in-hand (pun not intended).  We mentioned back on February’s podcast as trending topic, and last week the huge topic of  Location-based social media came up.  You just can’t ignore mobile.
  • Growth of the micro-niche.  That’s where operators and customers are getting crazy-specific and detailed in their needs and requirements.  Social media communities and search engine optimization are the two main forces that I think are making that possible.  Think about it:  10 years ago, how could “Vampire Coffee-Lover Tour Operators” and “Vampire Coffee-Lovers” and “Vampire-Friendly Coffee-Inspired Travel Agents” find each other?  Now, a quick search of Google and a marriage made.
