In fact, I unfollowed everyone and started from scratch following people, creating lists in the travel niche, and redoing how I use Twitter. A few days after making the change, 25,000 people unfollowed me. They were only following me because I followed them back. The number of lists I was on INCREASED by 400. Spam DM's and messages stopped completely. The number of RT's I got actually increased slightly. I'd say my Twitter experience improved when I lost 25,000 followers.
